Artrylic

Artrylic is a way to breathe new life into discarded cast acrylic scraps - the detritus of other projects and jobs that may be unusable due to irregular shapes and sizes.

The concept of Artrylic is simple: take a handful of mis-shapen acrylic scraps, add color, and assemble with 3D printed components and quality hardware.

The key element that transforms a collection of scraps into purposeful art is the application of acrylic paint dilluted in acrylic Weld-On 4 solvent which not only thins the paint and allows it to swirl, mix, and fill gaps, but helps to fuse the various pieces together, creating stable structures from otherwise flimsy, misshapen scraps.

In the form of this coffee table concept, three layers of various irregularly shaped pieces are combined with abstract paint swirls and then sandwiched between a top and bottom circular layer to provide a smooth, usable tabletop. This assembly is then joined to four legs with a custom 3D printed disk and hardware, creating layers of color and translucent-to-opaque effects.

Because acrylic scraps are often heavily discounted, if not free, the materials cost of production is a fraction of what it otherwise would be, making this not only a great way to upcycle plastic, but also a cost-effective way to add color and style to a space.
